TUI GROUP SAFETY & RISK LOOK FORWARD TO SUMMER 2024
Dear Partners,
We are looking forward to Summer 24. TUI Group Safety & Risk’s international team continue to manage the health & safety of our guests in a single consistent way under one brand. When we review and update our policies and procedures, they have one health & safety message as TUI Group.
Our trained team focuses on the safety of accommodation, the health & safety associated with tours, activities transport and pools, management of Incidents and Illness, Policy and Compliance and Occupational Safety.
We know there is a long “to do list” to be ready for Summer 24 and that you will be very busy. Below are some items we think you will be interested in.
We are happy to help and will work together to find the best safety management solutions.
Wishing you all a good summer,
Paul Austin, Head of Group Safety & Risk
ACCOMMODATION TEAM
Assessments – Our guest accommodation is important to us all. Group Safety & Risk work with a number of health & safety assessment partners – such as Preverisk, Intertek Cristal, SGS and Biolinea – to assess the safety of the accommodation. During Summer 24 you may receive an email from one of them, requesting that you participate in an assessment. Please work with them to help us all to improve safety. The content of the risk assessments are based on the content of the ABTA Accommodation Health & Safety Technical Guide.
Action Plans – Some of you will be aware that sometimes action plans are put in place as a result of an assessment. If you have signed an action plan for work to be completed over the Winter 23, the Accommodation Team will be in contact with you shortly to confirm the work has been completed.

ACTIVITY & TRANSPORT TEAM
Assessments – We have looked at our activity and transport assessment process and as part of a broader change to the way are managing safety going forward we will be assessing risk rather than using audit checklists.
Risk Categories – Your activity or transport will be assigned an overall risk scoring using indicators such as country risk data, inherent activity risk and passenger figures. Once a score has been given, where appropriate, a risk assessment will be arranged; this might be on-site or a hybrid assessment.

INCIDENT AND ILLNESS MANAGEMENT TEAM
Incidents do happen; we would like to highlight some key areas to consider in your start of season checklist that may prevent an incident or illness.
Legionella Prevention – During periods of closure legionella bacteria may have grown in the water system. Follow the legionella 15-point plan prior to re-opening. Further guidance is available here.
Fire Safety Systems – Please check and maintain all fire safety systems prior to opening. It is important that staff know what to do in the event of an emergency. Further guidance is available here.
Undiagnosed Sickness – An Illness Management Plan should be in place and all staff know what they should do. Below is some advice to help with your POSI (Prevention of Spread of Infection) procedures:
- Encourage good personal hygiene to wash hands,
- Keep accurate records if guests report illness,
- Follow cleaning and disinfection protocols both public areas and guest room,
- Encourage symptomatic guests and staff stay in their room until they are 48 hours symptom free.
Please download the ABTA Tourism Accommodation Health & Safety Technical Guide, for detailed POSI guidelines and safety advice. The guide is available in nine languages (English, Arabic, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish). CLICK HERE.
Pool and Spas Systems – The fixtures, fittings, inlets and outlets, depth markings, pool surrounds, and furniture can all become fragile and faded over the cold winter months. It important that these areas are checked and where necessary replaced. Daily checks, regular maintenance and correct signage help ensure the facilities are up to the required safety standards.
