The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower team have produced a training video (see below) to help businesses to identify the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, gain an understanding of what a hidden disability is and be confident to approach and support people who are wearing a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower product.
What is the Hidden disabilities Sunflower lanyard?
The Sunflower Lanyard is an internationally recognised symbol for customers to share that they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately visible – and that they may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time to do things.
What is a hidden or non-visible disability?
Some disabilities are not visible, such as chronic pain, autism, or dementia. They also include learning difficulties, mental health conditions, speech impairments, respiratory and chronic conditions.
Some are permanent and others temporary. Every person is unique, and invisible disabilities affect people in different ways.
What do I need to do if one of my guests is wearing a Sunflower lanyard?
There is no single right or wrong way to deal with each situation, but you can always show kindness and respect.
“How can I help?” a simple question that goes a long way.
Be kind: Smile, be understanding and do not judge or make assumptions.
Listen closely: Make eye contact and talk to the person directly.
Show respect: give them time to explain and describe what you are doing to help them.
