As we move out of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are starting to see an increase in our customers reporting illness whilst on holiday. It is important that we ensure we maintain the good hygiene practices that were adopted through this time.
As a reminder Gastroenteritis is a very common condition that causes diarrhoea and vomiting and is normally caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Heat and humidity abroad, combined with alcohol and new foods, can cause minor stomach upset. We realise that for our mutual guests this can be most unpleasant, especially if this occurs while on holiday. This is why we have put together this Infection Prevention & Control advice that can be used in conjunction with your POSI (Prevention of Spread of Infection) protocols in the event of an episode of vomiting and diarrhoea in your hotel.
Top Tips
- Encourage good hand hygiene with liquid soap and water for all guests, staff and visitors to the hotel premises after using the toilet and before eating.
- If guests report illness , keep accurate records of events and details of those affected (i.e. name, room number, date and time of when they became ill, symptoms, duration of symptoms etc.).
- Vomit or faecal spillages should be managed as per your cleaning and disinfection protocol
- Increase the level of cleaning of public areas and use your POSI procedures for the cleaning of affected guests rooms.
- Encourage symptomatic guests to remain in their own room until they are 48hours symptom free or they are checking out of the hotel to go home.
- Ensure sufficient amounts of fluids are available to guests for drinking to maintain good hydration.
- Symptomatic staff should be excluded from work until they are a minimum of 48hours symptom free.
