Sustainability in action

Be inspired by these examples of hotels putting sustainability into practice – driving positive changes for the environment, local community, staff and guests.

Going Organic

Hotel Quinta da Serra, Portugal

This hotel has created a 20,000 square metres organic farm on of their land – growing vegetables and fruits such as cherries, chestnuts, plums, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and 51 different varieties of apples. Guests can enjoy the fresh produce in the hotel’s organic certified restaurant – the first in Portugal – which also sources other local products to support the community and keep everything as regional as possible.

Empowering the next generation

Atlantica Mare Village Ayia Napa, Cyprus

To help foster a love for the environment and the need to protect our planet, this hotel hosts several environment themed events, run by staff, for guests to join. These include weekly beach cleans and an environmental activity for children on a Friday (such as tree planting, nature drawing, gardening and kids receiving a certificate for participating). These events are well received, particularly by the younger generations.

Powered by the sun

Riu Hotels

Many Riu hotels have installed photovoltaic solar systems to capture the sun’s energy to power energy needs in their hotels for cooking, hot water, heating etc. This renewable source of energy has been installed by Riu Palace Maspalomas, Riu Palace Palmeras, Riu Papayas, Riu Palace Meloneras and Riu Palace Oasis.

Hotel Riu Festival and Hotel Riu San Francisco in Majorca were joint winners of the TUI Global Hotel Awards Sustainability category in 2022.The hotels are part of an alliance of hotels in Majorca working with the municipal waste company and a local fruit and vegetable producer. The project aims to reduce, reuse and recycle waste as well as minimize carbon emission and has also created jobs and income for local communities.

Making use of waste

TUI Magic Life Sarigerme, Turkey

This hotel has been turning vegetable waste from their kitchen and grass cuttings into fertilizer for their gardens. Each compost bin takes approximately 200kg of waste, with over 2,000kg of waste reused in this way in the first 6 months of implementation. TUI Magic Life Sarigerme has a goal to be self-sufficient in this area and not to buy purpose made compost.

Local sourcing

TUI Blue Elounda Village, Crete

TUI BLUE Elounda Village Resort & Spa values the local community. They source items such as meat, fish, cheese and vegetables from local suppliers. They also emphasis the importance to guests of purchasing locally made souvenirs and encourage the use of public transport to explore the island.
